The January preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers is up 1.5% compared to December in the latest Agricultural Prices report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service, released January 29. The Crop Index was unchanged but the Livestock Index increased 4 points based on 1990-1992=100 or 3.4%.
The January 2010 All Farm Products index is down 2 points, or 1.4%, from January 2009.
Prices for corn and soybeans are lower in the report. The corn price at $3.45 per bushel is 14 cents lower than December and 91 cents below January 2009. The soybean price, at $9.49 per bushel, went down 31 cents from December and is 48 cents below January 2009.
The price of another crop important to the Carolina-Virginia region is up, however. The January cotton price is 63.2 cents per pound, up 0.4 cents from December and 17.2 cents above January 2009.
The January beef cattle price is $81.90, up $3.30 from December and up $1.80 compared to January 2009.
Broilers are at 48 cents per pound in the latest report, up 6 cents from December. The price is unchanged from a year ago. Turkeys are 46.5 cents per pound, down 7.2 cents from December but up 2.7 cents compared to January 2009.
Carolina and Virginia hog producers should be encouraged by the report. The January 2010 hog price is $47.30 per cwt, up $2.30 from December and up $4.50 compared to January 2009.
